Frequently Asked Questions

When are your classes?

We run Mondays and Wednesdays, unless Vanier School is closed.  See here for times.  We will update all items on our facebook page, and will endeavour to remind all students in class.

What instructional ages are offered?

Normally, we like the students age 8 or older, but we will accept younger students on a conditional basis of maturity.  If it doesn't work out, we will refund membership dues.

Does my child need a uniform or equipment?

Everyone who starts can start out in a comfortable sweats and a t-shirt.  Students may purchase a gi (uniform) and sparring gloves from the club, or on their own, as long as it meets the standards.

Do I need to stay for the kids class?

No, you may leave your children in our care, so long as we have your contact information (mobile), so we may contact you for emergencies.  You must pick-up you children by the end of class.

How much is membership?

Returning and New Students are $225 each for the season.

What associations are you a part of?

Shintani Wado Kai Karate Federation gives us national certification, workshops, instruction and leadership for blackbelts, insurance, national team, etc.)        See www.shintani.ca.

Alberta Shintani Karate Association gives us our non-profit status, and promotes regional events in the Yellowhead Region, including workshops. Included in club dues.

I'm not sure I want to commit.  Can I try it out?

Yes, you can for a couple classes.

A signed waiver must be completed before any participation.  See Downloads.

Also, an information form must be completed for contact information.  See downloads for a papercopy, or complete the online form.

Are you insured?

Yes, we are insured.  With the waiver, all participants and parents of under-age students must understand the risk.  All instructors have received national instruction in teaching, and all have first aid training and Vulnerable Sector Checks with the RCMP.

I see you have all ages in this group.  How do I know my child will be safe?

Aside from the fact that this is a sport with risks, our instructors are very careful to slowly bring students up in intensity.   During sparring (play-fighting), participants are closely supervised, and are matched for skill and size.

Deviations from following the senseis are not tolerated, and those who will not follow immediate instruction are not permitted to continue those exercises.
